Sedation Dentistry Options To Relax

Sedation dentistry is a practice within the field of dentistry that involves the use of sedative medications to put patients in a state of moderate to deep relaxation while the dentist performs their dental procedures. Sedation dentistry is often recommended for people who have dental phobias, a strong gag reflex, or a sensitive gag reflex.

Is Sedation Dentistry Right for Me?

Your dentist has recommended that you undergo sedation dentistry, but you’re not sure whether it’s right for you. Many people avoid dental care out of fear, so sedation dentistry offers a way to feel comfortable and relaxed during your treatment.

Sedation dentistry is safe and effective. Your dentist will talk to you about your medical history and current medications to ensure that sedation dentistry is safe for you. They will also review your treatment plan and the sedation options with you.

Types of Sedation Dentistry

Oral Sedation

With oral sedation, you take a pill about an hour before your appointment. The pill will make you feel relaxed and sleepy, which allows you to remain awake but less aware of your surroundings. Oral sedation is prescribed for mild to moderate anxiety.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is inhaled through a mask that covers your nose. Unlike oral sedation, nitrous oxide takes effect almost immediately, so you will be able to drive yourself to and from the office. Nitrous oxide does not usually cause grogginess, and the effects of the gas dissipate quickly.

While nitrous oxide is safe to use, it is generally only recommended for adult patients with mild to moderate dental anxiety.

Intravenous Sedation

With intravenous sedation, you are given a sedative drug through an IV in your arm. IV sedation is more intense than nitrous oxide and oral sedation, and you may need to have a friend or family member drive you to and from the office.

General Anesthesia

General anesthesia is a type of sedation dentistry that uses medication to relax patients. It works well for patients who feel anxiety about going to the dentist. For dental procedures such as root canals, dental bridges, implants, dental crowns, and wisdom teeth removal, general anesthesia can be used. During general anesthesia, patients are not awake and typically have no recollection of the procedure.
